Hello
My name is Maggie Hackworth, and I’m a senior at Ohio University majoring in Journalism News and Information with a minor in English. After completing my undergraduate studies, I plan to pursue a law degree.
During my time at Ohio University, I have gained valuable experience working on the social media team for the Academic Achievement Center, assisting at the Front Desk for the center, and serving as a Learning Community Leader for undecided first-year students. Additionally, I am honored to be one of the first two recipients of the Jane M. Slanker Scholarship, an English-based award.
My Story
My nana was diagnosed with a rare type of cancer three years ago, and from that point on, they essentially gave her a five-year prognosis. The idea for Beyond the Green came from my own need to cope with this reality. Writing has been a really important outlet for me, a way to process the experience, and I think a lot of others feel the same way when facing a journey like this.
With Beyond the Green, I want to create a space where people can come together and use their words as a way of processing, healing, or just feeling connected. It’s about showing that none of us are alone in these experiences, and that by sharing our stories, we can find strength and even some peace.
As for the name, I’ve always loved the color green, and I realized it can represent so many things—renewal, resilience, hope. I think it fits because, even amid loss and struggle, there’s often still that thread of growth, of carrying on.
