Editor’s Note

Three years ago, my nana was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer, and we were given a five-year prognosis. This reality has been one I’ve had to come to terms with, and through it all, writing has become my outlet—a way to process and cope with the overwhelming emotions that come with such a journey. I know I’m not alone in needing this form of release, and I believe many others find solace in expressing their stories as well.

With Beyond the Green, I wanted to create a space where people could come together, share their words, and find healing, comfort, or simply connection. This project is about reminding each other that none of us have to face these experiences alone. By sharing our stories, we can find strength, resilience, and even a bit of peace in the process.

The name Beyond the Green holds a deep personal significance for me. I’ve always been drawn to the color green, and I realized it can symbolize so much—renewal, hope, resilience. Even amid loss, there’s always a thread of growth, of carrying on, and that’s what I hope this journal embodies.

Our mission with Beyond the Green is to be a journal dedicated to creating space for those navigating loss—particularly from cancer—while celebrating growth, resilience, and connection. Our mission is to magnify voices that delve into the realities of death, terminal illness, and grief, offering fresh, innovative literature that challenges conventional narratives.

By exploring themes of illness, death, and the color green in all its forms—whether symbolizing nature, harmony, renewal, or recovery—we aim to balance pieces of grief with moments of light, embracing the complexity of healing. Beyond the Green values diverse perspectives, connecting those directly impacted by cancer and those who offer reflections on life, loss, and beginnings.

We hope to shed light on the human experience and foster healing through storytelling, creating a compassionate community of readers and writers. Sharing stories is how we connect, remember, and move forward—together.
